Telemonster is a band in Chattanooga, TN. The group was formed by cousins Ben VanderHart (guitar/vocals) and Josh Barrett (drums) in 2010, after moving from their respective hometowns in Iowa and New Mexico. Though they hardly knew each other, the two found they had a shared passion for music rooted in their family tree. Their common interest in rock (from Led Zeppelin to Radiohead) and their love of technical composition (from Tchaikovsky to Miles Davis) also attracted bassist John-Michael Forman and pianist Dave Hess.
Drawing comparisons to Sufjan Stevens, Animal Collective, Grizzly Bear, and Vampire Weekend, the music reflects the many influences at work in the band. The songs are melodic like classical and catchy like pop, but underscored by complex jazz rhythms and the raw energy of rock ’n’ roll. The end result is both cerebral and visceral – it will spin your wheels and pluck your heartstrings.
Since their self-released album "A Girl I Knew" in 2012, Telemonster's members have been writing and recording amidst the disarray of having kids (8 in 3 years, collectively), building a studio, starting a record label, teaching economics, making pottery, and otherwise enjoying a quiet life.
Would you say our music is “dad rock”? Now wait. Before you answer, imagine us wearing pleated pants.
